To the Initiative Board of the Students Protest of '96 in Belgrade

Dear fellows from Belgrade, Nis and Pristina,
We, the students of the Slavic Seminar at the University of Basel wish to tell you, that we deeply respect ypur brave resistance against the concealed state violence.
The freedom of speech is the essential foundation for the undisturbed communication among people. The existance of the university makes sense only when such a communication is possible. The truths that are not born out of a free discussion but commanded from the top, are not truths. They are dictatorship. The university does not exist to be dictated. For that reason we support your strike, and your efforts to establish democracy, the freedom of speech, and a peaceful future with no wars.
