Milosevic Yields to Protests

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) -- On orders from President Slobodan Milosevic, Serbia's premier promised to quickly prepare legislation ceding control of Belgrade and 13 other cities to the opposition -- the government's long-awaited bow to 2 1/2 months of massive protests.

The protests may have begun with demands that Milosevic restore opposition victories at the polls, but they have broadened to encompass calls for more democracy.

More student and opposition rallies were scheduled for later today to press remaining demands. For students, those include punishment for those responsible for election fraud and police beating of protesters.

Yugo Students Keep Up Pressure

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) -- Students rallied for more government concessions today even after Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic bowed to their key demand and recognized opposition election victories in 14 cities.

About 20,000 students marched through the center of Belgrade, insisting on everything from greater press freedoms to Milosevic's resignation and the firing of the Belgrade University rector.

However, a party led by Milosevic's wife, Mirjana Markovic, warned that further demonstrations could lead to confrontations.

Yugo Opposition Pushes Harder

On the 78th straight day of marches, students and opposition supporters vowed to continue pressing for democracy. A day earlier, they had forced Milosevic to concede that his Socialist Party had lost elections in Belgrade and 13 other cities.

Earlier Wednesday, 20,000 students marched through the city center, demanding that the Belgrade University rector be fired and those responsible for election fraud and police violence be punished.

The opposition said more than 300 people had been injured and 100 arrested in clashes with police earlier this week. Six students were released from jail Tuesday night. Police said Wednesday that 19 people had been arrested Monday and Tuesday.
