The Plato

Today's protest gathering of the Belgrade University students started at the Plato at noon. The Student Protest '96/97 is fighting for acknowledgment of the November 17 election results. By one o'clock the area was filled with students coming from their home-schools where they had previously held assemblies. The traditional protest walk started without any prior program, due to the failure of the loud speaker. The student security organized the head of the procession and the students followed, pouring into Vasina street.

The "Walk"

The students walked a larger circle today. The route took us to Slavija (via Kolarceva and Srpskih Vladara), where they turned into Beogradska. We then walked down 27. Marta, Dzordza Vasingtona and Cara Dusana, the up Tadeusa Koscuskog and back to the Plato through Uzun Mirkova.

The walk was uneventful. The procession was headed by a Serbian flag and the icon of the Three Handed Virgin, a replica of one of the most significant treasures of the Serbian culture, which was presented to the Student Protest by the monks of the Chilandar monastery. New school flags could be seen, the newest one being of the Law School. The 30,000 students which walked today carried the traditional utilities such as the Chupa-Chups balloon, the banner of the School of Architecture and the flags of the School of Electrical Engineering and the School of Mining and Geology.
