The Chancellorship

One of the key events was supposed to take place today. The University Staff was supposed to change the Chancellor. This act is legitimate, because the teachers elect the Chancellor by a majority vote, but is illegal because the Chancellor is appointed by the University Counsil which consists of members elected by the staff and members elected by the government. The Staff meeting was scheduled to take place in the Chancellorship, but the teachers were not allowed inside and the doors were locked. The teachers then moved to the adjacent building of the School of Philosophy. The students on the other side realizing that the Chancellorship is also filled with police, decided to "exorcise the Devil" from the building with prayers, candles and garlic. The meeting ended around 3 o'clock, and the newly elected acting Chancellor, Dragan Kuburovic the vice-chancellor addressed the gathering. He was followed by service information and Cedomir Jovanovic who announced the route for the day.

The "Walk"

Yet another "media walk" by the Student Protest '96/97 through the streets of Belgrade. In Srpskih Vladara we had the first opportunity to see people waving from the City Parliament. The building is still "yellow" from the eggs thrown at it while the Socialists were refusing to hand over the authority in December 1996. The opposition is now in control and support the students from the windowsills of the Parliament. We then walked to Slavija, passing by the Student Cultural Center and Students Alliance, both run by people of the regime. We went up Beogradska street to the Law School and turned into Bulevar Revolucije, Takovska and Ivo Lola Ribar, where Grandma Olga waved from her balcony. The procession returned to the Plato where the gathering ended. There were no incidents during the walk and another rally has been scheduled for tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
