DEANS CALL FOR RESOLUTION OF UNIVERSITY
        CRISIS.

Belgrade university deans called on the
oldest university vice-president, Dragan Kuburovic of the
School of Oral Medicine, to convene a session of the
university Teachers council for Feb. 26, to discuss
resolving the crisis at the university. The university
has been at a complete stand-still since November last,
when the student protest started. Students are asking for
the recognition of the local election results (which has
mostly been fulfilled), and the dismissal of University
president Dragutin Velickovic. Velickovic refuses to
resign, and the Teachers council, which has the authority
to dismiss him, has not met. Of 30 Belgrade university
colleges and institutes, the deans' meeting was attended
by representatives of all save three institutions. The
council of deans has begun acting as a parallel
university authority. Most of the deans want the council
of deans and institute directors to act, in future, as
the university teachers council, assessing that the
council of deans is the only university body which is
performing its duty. Kuburovic, who facilitates
communication between the deans and president Velickovic,
has agreed to call the university teachers' council.
Kuburovic believes that there is no more room for
compromise. We must be determined to end all activities
at the university if the crisis is not resolved in the
next 48 hours, says Kuburovic. Copyright ©
